What is Leprosy Sewa? Leprosy Sewa means "leprosy mission" or literally "to be serving the Lepers." Many people in India are affected by this pitiful disease. Once a person contracts leprosy, if the proper treatment is not taken immediately, the disease slowly takes over the entire body. Various organizations and individuals have established leprosy colonies. The lepers have established some colonies spontaneously. When these people had nowhere to go, they decided to create a colony of their own. Of course, regardless of who establishes the colony, lepers are expected to live on the outskirts of the city, just as Bible days. There are many websites that say that leprosy has been eliminated or almost has eliminated. We can only tell you by our experience, that though it may have been eliminated in some parts of India, yet in Bilaspur, Chattisgarh, India, where Beulah McHale grew up, the disease has not been eliminated. The city of Bilaspur is located in Chattisgarh state (formally known as Madhayapradesh). It is in the central part of India. Even though there are over a million people living in Bilaspur, demographically, it is relatively a small city. The team helps the lepers in this particular colony in Bilaspur by taking care of their small needs. We buy food, tarps to cover their rooftops, lanterns, plates, cups, clothing, medication, etc. |
